The roof tiles are made of clay. One website I visited suggested that it was clay from rice paddies. It may be true. Traditionally, the farmers burned the rice straw on the fields to enrich the soil. That may have given it the black/grey color. The problem with this theory is that the rice paddies would have to be destroyed. At any rate, the clay is shaped in molds and provides a strong, lightweight tile. Some of the new roof tiles are made of concrete, but they are thicker, heavier, and not as durable. They also don't look as nice.

What are the roofs made of? It looks like many many shingles of stone, but is it carved wood shingles, painted grey?
