Another reason to ban hunting

Shot by an American "sports" hunter
Northern hunters, scientists and people with vivid imaginations have discussed the possibility for years.
...
"We've known it's possible, but actually most of us never thought it would happen," said Ian Stirling, a polar bear biologist with the Canadian Wildlife Service in Edmonton.

It may be the only one of its kind anywhere in the world - ever.

Quick shoot it.

I think hunting can have a place in the world. Without hunting, many First Nations communities in Canada would fall apart. A hunter who is safety-oriented, humane, and who uses both the animal's flesh and fur is a responsible partaker in a tradition as old as the human species. I knew one such hunter a long time ago.

"Sports" hunting would be another matter.

Yes, of course, you make a good point. When I was growing up, we shot deer and grouse - and ate them. There are people who hunt because they need to.

I have nothing good to say, though, about sport hunting with high-powered rifles or high-powered bows. The idea that it is ever "sporting" and that it's okay if the animals "have a chance" is ridiculous.
